ADOLPHO

The first year I went to high school, Adolpho, the older brother of my good friend Wayo,   would always buy the Express News and he’d buy a bag of corn chips and bottle of tobasco sauce while we waited for the bus.   He’d stand there, leaning against the Mercantile; he’d open up the Fritos and pour the whole bottle of Tabasco sauce on it and then he’d close the top and he’d shake the bag.  And that’s what he would eat.  I tried it one time. I bought a bag of Fritos and Tabasco and did it like Adolpho.  I thought, oh no, I couldn’t eat it.  He made it look real good.

So we were waiting at the Mercantile for Quiroz, who was also the water guy, to bring the bus and Adolpho would read the paper and he’d go, “Ah, yeah, well…” and everybody would get up and go stand next to him, “What, what is it?”  He say, “It says right here…” and then he would tell us the whole story.   So then everybody would go and sit back down on the edge of the Mercantile steps.  Then he would continue to read the paper and he’d say, “Oh, now this is something here.”   Everybody would run back over to him, “What, what is it?”  “See, what they’re going to do here is this…”  The kids would say, “Oh…”   and here comes the bus.  Everybody would get on the bus and he’d take his paper and continue reading on the bus.  We would rely on him reading the paper every morning and telling us the most interesting stories.
