Sometimes when we would go to the La Bonita Ranch, I would take my accordion with me. I would sit under a mesquite tree and the guys would all be working on the line digging holes in the hot sun. I’d play the accordion, da ta da ta da da lital da. They’d say, “Hey, play such and such a song, do you know that one?” “Yeah” “Play that one.” So I’d play it and sometimes one of the guys would start singing. I think it was helpful.
Then after awhile I would say, “Okay, I’m not going to play any more now.” They would say, “Thanks for playing.” I’d put the accordion away. I’d lay back and take a nap. They would continue to dig holes and move along on the line. By the time I’d wake up, they had moved down the line and I’d have to go and find another tree to sit under to be close to them.
