For lunch, they would sit underneath a tree to eat either sandwiches or tacos. And then my Grandfather would say, “Okay let’s take a little siesta boys.” He always called them boys. “Let’s take a little nap." They’d pull up a log to rest their head on and they’d put their hat on their face to block out the sun. They’d be laying under a mesquite tree there. They would sleep 15 – 20 minutes.
I wouldn’t sleep, I’d be wondering around. I’d go off some place and I’d be looking at them from over there. I’d have to find something to do, can’t play the accordion because I’d wake them up. I can’t be talking. I would be waiting for them to wake up so I couldn’t make any noise.
Finally, my Grandfather would say, “Okay boys, let’s get back to work again.” They’d all get up and stretch out and put their hats on. Back out into the hot sun again.
